Welcome back to our series on breaking into the entertainment industry. In Part 1 and Part 2, we covered the basics of on-camera work and local networking. Now, we are diving into the booth.
Voice acting is a thriving industry in the Pacific Northwest. It is also an industry currently facing a massive technological shift. If you have ever been told you have a “great voice,” this guide is for you. We will show you how to navigate the modern landscape, find an agent, and why your human touch is more valuable now than ever before.
THE HUMAN ADVANTAGE IN AN AI ERA
Artificial Intelligence is the biggest topic in voice-over today. It is true that AI is faster and cheaper for some projects. Many companies use AI for “scratch tracks” or low-budget internal training videos. This has created a “headwind” for entry-level human talent.
However, AI often produces what the industry calls “AI slop.” It is flat. It lacks intention. Quality brands avoid it because it sounds robotic and insincere.
As a human actor, you have the “Human Edge.” You can adapt to a script in real-time. If a director asks for “more smile” or “a touch of sarcasm” on the third word of a sentence, a human can deliver that instantly. AI cannot yet match human emotion, inflection, and the ability to take direction on-the-fly. Producers and directors still want a partner, not just a software program.
WHERE THE WORK IS: MORE THAN JUST CARTOONS
When people think of voice acting, they often think of animation. But the industry is much broader. Most voice actors make their living in “working-class” VO roles. These include:
- AUDIOBOOKS: This is a massive growth area. It requires stamina and the ability to maintain consistent character voices over hundreds of pages.
- NARRATION FOR FILM: Documentaries and corporate films need professional narrators to tell their stories.
- PODCASTS: From hosting to voicing “fictional” audio dramas, podcasts are a primary source of modern VO work.
- COMMERCIALS: This is the bread and butter of the industry. It requires a relatable, “guy or girl next door” delivery.
The internet says voice acting is easy money. The internet is wrong. It is a highly competitive craft. But for those with the right training and a professional portfolio, the opportunities are there.
TOP PACIFIC NORTHWEST TALENT AGENCIES
You need representation to access the best-paying union and non-union jobs. In the PNW, several agencies specialize in or have strong departments for voice talent.
- BIG FISH NW TALENT AGENCY: Based in the Seattle-Spokane-Portland corridor. They represent principal voice-over artists and work with major brands like Amazon and Microsoft. They are a staple in the region for over 25 years.
- ZT AGENCY: This agency represents talent across the PNW for film, TV, and commercial work. They look for actors with significant training.
- THE ACTORS GROUP (TAG) / IN BOTH EARS: TAG is highly selective. Their dedicated voice division, In Both Ears, is a boutique agency with a national reach. They represent some of the top VO talent in the country.
THE GOLDEN RULE: Never pay an agency to represent you. Agencies make money by taking a commission (usually 10-20%) from the work they book for you. If a “talent agency” asks for a “registration fee” or “website fee” upfront, walk away. They are a scam.
TRAINING: VOICE ACTING IS STILL ACTING

Many people think a good voice is enough. It isn’t. You must be able to act.
Take acting classes. Learn how to break down a script. Understand “beats” and “objectives.” Voice acting is about conveying a message and an emotion through sound alone. If you cannot act on camera or on stage, you will struggle in the booth. Classes help you develop the versatility needed to survive in an AI-impacted market.
DIRECT BOOKING AND ONLINE COLLECTIVES
While you work on getting an agent, you can find work yourself. Several websites allow you to list your profile and bid on jobs directly.
- VOICE123: One of the largest open marketplaces for voice actors.
- VOICES.COM: Another major platform for commercial and corporate narration.
- BACKSTAGE: Great for finding character work and independent film narration.
These sites require a monthly or yearly subscription. Treat them as a business expense. They are great places to practice your workflow and build your initial resume.
